One year after defeating LTTE

The country today marks one year after eliminating LTTE terrorism
The Victory Parade to mark the victory will be held Thursday at the
Galle Face Green.
The victory parade will be held on May 18 from next year onwards.
Many religious activities have been organized across the country to mark
the event.
The Ranaviru Seva Authority requested all to light an oil lamp to
invoke blessings on war heroes.
Quiz competition
Nutrition Society of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka will present a
quiz competition Denumai Poshanayai.
North Western Province Invited Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz
Competition Final Session will be held on May 20 at 8.30 a.m. at Mini
auditorium of the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition, Wayamba
University, Makandura.
Chartered Chemists to be honoured
Eleven Chartered Chemists who have rendered distinguished and
invaluable services to the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon over the past
four decades are to be honoured by unveiling their photographs in its
Council Room.
The unveiling will take place on June 3 at the Institute headquarters
at Adamantane House, 341/22, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya.
The persons who will be so honoured are Professors R.S. Ramakrishna,
E.R. Jansz, J.N.O. Fernando and H.D. Gunawardana, Ms. C.L.M. Nethsinghe,
Yogeswaree Mahesan and Sukumal Wimalasena and Messers N.I.N.S. Nadarasa,
T. Kandasamy, E.G. Somapala and H.S. Mevan Pieris.
Dialogue
The first in a series of dialogues on 'a new Constitution for the Sri
Lankan Comity' organised by the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity
will be held at the Bakeer Markar Centre at KG 07, Elvitigala Flats,
Narahenpita, on May 19 at 4.30 p.m.
Dr. Jayantha Seneviratne will deliver the guest lecture.
Badur Mowlood
The recital of Badur Mawlood, will be conducted by Al Haj Moulavi M.
N. M. Fardhy and Al Haj Moulavi A. B. M. Mubarak (Falahi) on May 20,
after Magrib prayers and will continue until Isha prayers at Nawala
Jummah Mosque.
Bad weather grounds flights

At least three flights, both incoming and outbound were delayed at
the Bandaranaike International Airport both due to bad weather
conditions coupled with volcanic ash clouds over Europe.
An Airport official said UL 505 bound for London was delayed by about
two hours and an incoming flight from London too got delayed by several
hours.
Flight EY 7410 bound for Male too had been delayed by several hours
due to inclement weather conditions locally.
Illegal sand miners arrested

Chilaw Police Puttalam Vice Squad arrested five persons with 2
tractors transporting sand from Daduruoya. Sand mining at Daduruoya has
been prohibited by a Supreme Court order.
This arrest was made on May 15 at Weerakumandaluwa and Kalupalam
areas in Chilaw.
Nonagenarian robbed of gold jewellery

A necklace worth of Rs. 175,000 and a valuable gold ring belonging to
a 91 year old woman living close to Dankotuwa have been taken by force
in broad-daylight on May 15, Dankotuwa Police said. Police
investigations have revealed that the robber had removed tiles and the
ceiling of the roof and entered the house.
At the time of the robbery the woman was wearing the necklace and the
ring.
Gold chain snatch thief nabbed

A man who snatched a gold chain from a woman was arrested during the
day.
He had snatched the chain worth Rs. 60,000 at Embulgoda near the
woman's house.
The suspect from Embulgoda-Mahawatta produced before Gampaha Chief
Magistrate Mohamed Macky was remanded.
Weliweria police prosecuted.
Rs 200,000 worth illegal cigarettes seized

Karandeniya Police arrested a man transporting an illegally imported
parcel of cigarettes worth Rs. 200,000 last week, Police said.
This is the first time, such a large stock of illegal cigarettes had
been seized, Police added. Karandeniya Police OIC IP Jagath Amerawansa
arrested the man at Agalaketiya, Karandeniya after seeing him carrying a
big parcel on the pillion of a motor cycle.
The man, when questioned, had confessed that he had been engaged in
this illegal business for a long time, Police said.
Dengue eradication fortnight in NWP schools

The Education Ministry in collaboration with the Health Ministry has
launched a special Dengue Eradication fortnight in all government
schools in the Kurunegala District until May 24. School principals have
been instructed in a special circular that principals and teachers
should paly a vital role in this effort to build a dengue-free country
in the future.
The government hopes to educate 5,000 schoolteachers and 1.4 million
students in the North Western Province on the dengue controlling
activity.
Correction and Clarification
With reference to the article IDPs Benefit from the Cash for Work
program in the Daily News of May 14, the funding from the Australian
Government for the Cash for Work program is US$ 12 million and not Rs.
12 million, as inadvertently reported. |
