Woman knocked down
Panadura Group Corr.
A sixty year old woman was knocked down by a motor cycle on Galle
Road at Horetuduwa. The woman identified as Carman Patricia Fernando
died after admission to the Panadura Hospital.

K. Sadeepa Nisanjaya Bandara (4 1/2) of H-10, Ginigahamulahena Maboda,
Atale, Kegalle is suffering from an acute heart ailment (TOF, Cyanotic
heart disease). Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Aruna Kapuruge has
recommended an urgent heart surgery to save his life. The surgery will
cost Rs. 350,000. Child’s mother W.A. Samantha Padmakanthi says she is
unable to meet this expenditure due to her family’s financial plight.
She requests philanthropists to assist her child’s cause by sending
whatever contribution to help expedite the surgery. All contributions
should be remitted to A/c No. 299 200100021665 at the People’s Bank
Kegalle branch.
May Day Mass
The Christian Workers Fellowship will hold the May Day Mass at St.
Michael's Church, Polwatte at 9.00 am on May 1. The fellowship had held
May Day masses from 1959 up to now and is the only religious event held
to mark the day.
Illegally imported cigarettes seized
A group of STF men during a raid carried out on a shop in Cassim
Road, Kalmunai seized 106 packets of Gold Seal cigarettes (20 cigarettes
per packet) illegally imported to Sri Lanka and took into custody the
shop owner.
The suspect was handed over to the Kalmunai Police for legal action.
Wild jumbo captured
Wellasse BANDARA
A wild elephant harassing the villagers of the Nikaweratiya region
over a long period was captured after it was anestheticized by Wildlife
Department men yesterday.
The nine foot pachyderm was about 35 years and had damaged about 20
houses in the Tumbulla hamlet in Nikaweratiya. It used to forage into
the villages in search of food, eating crops and damaging homes in
search of paddy or rice.
The Wildlife men chased the elephant to the Wildlife Veterinary
Centre, Nikaweratiya where the beast was captured after firing the
anaesthetic. Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa who was in
the area came to see the beast and directed the officers to release it
to a wildlife reserve.
Nabbed with T56
Avissawella Police investigating a shooting incident at Talduwa,
Dehiowita Monday arrested a suspect along with a T56 rifle and 25
bullets. The three wheeler used by the suspect to commit the offence has
also been taken into Police custody along with its driver.
Buddhist Talk
Ajahn Varadho Thera, will deliver a Buddhist Talk in English, on "The
meaning of Tanha," at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society,
Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya, on Saturday May 1, at 4.30
p.m.
Dhammadesana
A dhammadesana in memory of Speaker and Minister K B Ratnayake will
be broadcast over the SLBC Rajarata service on May 1 morning to
commemorate his 7th death anniversary.
Public Lecture
A public lecture organized by the Sri Lanka United Nations
Association on "Tread Lightly on the Earth" will be held at the HNB
Conference Hall, J.B. Jaya Mawatha, Colombo 10 on May 3 at 5.30 p.m. The
guest speaker will be Former Vice President International Court of
Justice, Judge C.G. Weeramantry.
Tamil for Buddhist monks

The All Island Buddhist Association has launched a program of Tamil
for Buddhist monks who are involved in National Peace conciliation and
propagation of Buddhism in foreign countries, said National Institute of
Education Director Dr. Rani Fernando at a conference held in the Kandy
YMBA.
Terrorism has come to an end. Now this is the time to foster the
relationship between the South and the North.

Anuradhapura District MP Shehan Semasinghe
with Provincial Minister H.B. Semasinghe during an inspection
