The majority of the Jaffna investors had little knowledge about the
capital market activities as this segment of the society had to
experience the three decade war. Therefore, the SEC set up a Capital
Market Centre (CMC) in the Jaffna University to educate investors who
are interested. We started the relationship with the Jaffna University
10 months ago," SEC Director General Channa de Silva said.
The Director General said SEC equipped the CMC in the Jaffna
University with computers and online internet facilities, which will
help to reach the SEC data base to provide a better system of
information to the interested people. "We have also signed an agreement
with the University of Jaffna to offer a gold medal to the student who
excels in financial market subjects", he said.
"SEC has a close relationship with the Jaffna University and the
Yalpanam Chamber of Commerce. The most recent investor forum, which was
organized by the Yalpanam Chamber of Commerce, was a success. Over 100
investors attended the forum. We are virtually educating the bottom
level investors. This is just the beginning of the CSE Jaffna branch and
the keenness investors and their confidence over the capital market
activities are remarkable, de Silva said.
If the SEC, the Jaffna University and the Yalpanam Chamber of
Commerce deploy a serious education programs it will benefit the
country's economy in a significant manner and the CSE Jaffna branch will
be a model to the other countries that were affected by the war and is
beginning to build their economy strongly, he said.
"According to my point of view, I see the CSE Jaffna branch is very
special, as it is close to India, which is one of the fastest emerging
economies in Asia. Sri Lanka has a close relationship with India and its
people. There are many opportunities and the potential to grow is
enormous", the Director General said.
"We need to further strengthen the relationship between the SEC, the
Jaffna University and the Yalpanam Chamber of Commerce. The CSE Jaffna
branch will gradually nurture the country's economy", de Silva said.
