Free public seminar on Asthma
A free public seminar hosted by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK)
to mark World Asthma Day will be held on May 8 from 9.30 a.m. at Park
Premier Banquet Hall, Excel World.
The seminar will be conducted by the Association of Pulmonologists -
Sri Lanka

to reserve their seats before May 6, the company said.
They will be registered on a first come, first served basis.
The panel will be headed by Chest Hospital Welisara Consultant
Respiratory Physician Dr Bandu Gunasena who is also the President of the
Association of Pulmonologists - Sri Lanka. The speakers at the seminar
will be Central Chest Clinic Colombo Consultant Respiratory Physician Dr
Kirthi Gunasekera, and Chest Clinic Matale Consultant Respiratory
Physician Dr Manil Peiris.
Exam for Grade 3 posts
The open and limited examination for recruitment to Grade 3 posts in
the Agricultural Service will be held at 21 examination centres in
Colombo on April 24 and 25, the Examinations Department said.
Nearly 3,000 candidates are due to sit this examination in all three
languages, a department spokesman said.
Admission cards have been sent by post to the candidates.
Those who have not received their admission cards should contact the
Department’s Foreign Languages division on 011-2785230.
Meelad-Un-Nabi celebration
The 57th annual Meelad-Un-Nabi celebrations of the Moor’s Islamic
Cultural Home will be held on April 24 at the MICH Reception hall ‘Her
Highness Sheika Fatima Building,’ No. 7, Lily Avenue, Wellawatte,
Colombo 6.
The proceedings will commence with the recital of Mowlood followed by
the prize giving.
Cash prizes and awards will be distributed to winners for both junior
and senior in Oratory and Calligraphy for both sexes.
Bangladesh High Commissioner M. Mahbubuzaman will be the chief guest.
MICH President Omar Kamil will preside.
Workshop
The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing under the Mass Media and
Information Ministry has organised a free one day work shop style
seminar on Computer Graphic Designing for those who intend to gain an
exposure and understanding of the use of essential Graphic Software
packages used in Multi Media Industry.
The seminar will be held on May 9 from 8.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. at the
Sri Lanka Institute of Printing, Government Printing Department, 118,

Arrested for firing in air

Pallama police arrested a suspect who had allegedly threatened
residents in Punawitiya, Andigama by firing in the air with a T-56 rifle
on Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect is under interrogation.
Police who recovered a spent T-56 rifle bullet from the scene is
conducting further investigations to recover the weapon used by the
suspect.
Attempting to enter Jaffna:
French national arrested

Police officials attached to the Omanthai main checkpoint yesterday
arrested a French national for attempting to enter the Jaffna Peninsular
with a forged document. According to Police Spokesman SP Prishantha
Jayakody, she has forwarded forged documents to the officials at the
Omanthai checkpoint and tried to enter the Jaffna Peninsular in a
threewheeler. These documents issued by the Defence Ministry giving her
permission to visit the Peninsular have been forged, SP Jayakody added.
The French national has been identified as Henry Pollard and was
arrested by the Omanthai Police, he said.
Lankan director's 'Shadows of Silence' going to Cannes
Paris-based Sri Lankan director Pradeepan Raveendran's film "Shadows
of Silence", listed as a French entry, will be presented in the
Directors' Fortnight section at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival May 12-23.
Based in Paris, Raveendran makes films in Tamil and Sinhala and his
"Shadows of Silence" has beaten 20 Indian films - none of which were
selected - to the Directors' Fortnight.
"Shadows of Silence" is described as being about the "nightmares and
realities of a depressed person in exile". (IANS)

Aluthgama Dhammananda Nayake Thera, will be conferred with the honorary
title, Agga Maha Panditha by the Myanmar Government at a ceremony to be
held in Rangoon on April 27.
Bo sapling to be planted

A sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura will be planted
in the premises of the Bodhignana Meditation Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh
on April 30 at a ceremony held under the patronage of its Director Ven.
Ashith Jinarakkhita Nayake thera.
A Sri Lankan Buddhist delegation led by Ven. Naranpanawe Nandaratana
thera, Director, Bo Sevana Dhamma Research Centre, Anuradhapura and
Buddhika Sanjeewa, Co-ordinating Secretary to the President will leave
for Dhaka, Bangladesh carrying the Bo sapling on April 27 to participate
in this event.

Dead body found

An unidentified body of a youth was found near the level crossing in
the Akuralla Junction in Galivura in the Ambalangoda area, Police
sources said.
There were no injuries on the body.
Police are investigating.
