Electricity for rural areas

The Power and Energy Ministry will launch a power project for supplying electricity to rural areas of the country, through the US$ 105 million loan from Iran, Ministry sources told the Daily News.

The loan was granted on the request of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The project will be started in May. Eastern, Central, South, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and North Central Provinces will be covered by the project.

Eighty seven percent of the country is using electricity.

The Ministry expects that after the implementation of the project, electricity consumers will increase to 92 percent.
