Senior officers' supervision needed for court proceedings

A senior officer of the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) should supervise junior prosecuting officers in courts to conduct proceedings in an efficient manner to assist court, said Senior DIG Keerthi Gajanayake.

Senior DIG Gajanayake referring to remarks by several judicial officers recently said all prosecuting officers should assist court by providing the correct material in respect of their cases without moving for dates to submit reports.

Several Judicial officers observed that most of the time, police move for dates stating that they have forwarded the dossier of the investigations to the Attorney General and are awaiting reply.

Judicial officers observed that court had never seen a senior police officer appearing before court to conduct proceedings and only a sergeant or a Constable appeared for the prosecution in court.
