Navy women clinch National Weightlifting C'ship

With an excellent display of their sporting prowess, the women's weightlifting team of the Sri Lanka Navy won both National Women's Weightlifting and Powerlifting Championships. Their spectacular performance was widely admired throughout the championship.

The National Women's Weightlifting Championship was held at the Indoor Stadium of the University of Kelaniya recently. Navy's women competitors won the championship with an impressive medal tally of three golds and one silver W/OD JAS Nirmani won the Gold Medal in the 58 kgs weight class and W/OD DAS Ranasinghe won the Gold Medal in the 63 kgs weight class. Meanwhile, W/AB LWS Perera won the Gold Medal in the over 75 kgs weight class and W/OD BMK Samarakoon won the silver medal in the 63 kgs weight class.

The National Women Powerlifting Championship was held at the Indoor Stadium of the Ministry of Sports recently and Navy's W/OD HGSG Jayasinghe, W/OD DAS Ranasinghe, W/AB KA Priyani and W/AB LWS Perera won the first places in the 56 kgs, 60 kgs, 67 kgs and over 90 kgs weight classes respectively. W/OD BMK Samarakoon won the second place in the 48 kgs weight class.

The victory at the two championships is a very good indication of the strong commitment shown by Navy women in the field of sports. They competed with equal enthusiasm like their male counterparts, bear testimony to the Navy's equal facilitation which is extended towards all sports personnel to achieve excellence in their chosen sports fields.
