Corruption reaches Labour Party
UK: The Labour Party of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown suspended
four of its members, including three ex Ministers, accused of seeking
bribes in exchange for lobbying for government policies.
It has emerged as a new complication to the Government party, faced
with general elections scheduled for July 3 at the latest.
The scandal involves ex State Transportation Secretary Stephen Byers,
ex Defence Minister Geoff Hoon and ex Health Minister Patricia Hewitt,
as well as labour party Parliamentarian Margaret Moran.
The three officials, filmed secretly as part of an investigation by
The Sunday Times weekly, are now awaiting conclusions of an internal
inquiry into the labour party parliamentary group, according to sources
of the party.
Byers, who is now in the most complicated situation, asserted to have
reached secret agreements and mentioned tariffs of up to 5,000 sterling
pounds a day, around 5,600 euros, for his services.
The case came to light on Monday, when Channel 4 Television Company
broadcast a program in which they showed the films made by The Sunday
Times.
The images showed the labour party members being contacted by a US
fictitious company that was trying to hire them to implement a political
campaign in exchange for retribution. London, Prensa Latina
