Govt to probe Channel 4 incident

The Government take measures to initiate investigations to find out how the document of retired General Sarath Fonseka was smuggled to Channel 4 and as to why it held the written interview with a suspect who was in the custody of Sri Lanka Army, Director General, Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hulugalle said yesterday at a press conference held at the Media Centre for National Security.

He also said that to interview with a suspect in the custody of an Army and a while a Court Martial case was in progress was illegal.

Lakshman Hulugalle further said the Channel 4 has a bad history in connection with the matters related to Sri Lanka and it telecast fake videos to defame the Sri Lankan Government.

The investigations would be commenced to find out as to why this institution engaged in such activities against Sri Lanka and the Government.

Retired General Sarath Fonseka was a suspect and he could not be provided extra facilities such as AC rooms that were not given to any other suspects. There had been other suspects in similar or higher capacities without additional facilities, Hulugalle said. He said that all were equal before the law.

Referring to inquiries made by the CID from JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Anoma Fonseka, Lakhsman Hulugalle said that they were made not in connection with the Channel 4 incident.

The inquiries were made by the CID in connection with their statements made during Presidential Elections with regard to the funds received by General Sarath Fonseka. He said that there were separate investigations conducted by the Police and CID against him.
