The United National Front which was an amalgamation of 12 parties
formed to contest the recently concluded Presidential Election is now in
splinters.
It was coming forward to contest the General Election under the same
name in an effort to deceive the masses, said Jathika Sanwardhana
Peramuna leader Achala Asoka Suraweera at a press conference held in
Kandy in support of his party candidates contesting the general election
from the Kandy district.
Suraweera said his party firmly opposed the present Constitution when
it was introduced by J. R. Jayewardene in 1978. Everyone should assist
to change this Constitution which had been an obstacle for the country's
progress.
He said General Sarath Fonseka had no fixed party or symbol. After
contesting the Presidential election under the swan symbol he had now
come forward to contest the general election under the trophy symbol.
Suraweera said his party was fielding candidates in 17 districts and
their objective was to win at least six seats in Parliament.
