Police settle Anuradhapura clash

A clash between a group of undergraduates of the Rajarata University
and residents of Ambathalagama village which erupted Tuesday was
amicably settled by Police after discussions between both parties
yesterday.

Three faculties of the Rajarata University
were closed following a dispute between undergraduates and
villagers.

Faculties of Applied Science, Management and Humanities were
indefinitely closed from yesterday. |
Three villagers and several students were injured in the clash which
erupted between the students of the Applied Science Faculty and the
villagers Tuesday.
When the two parties were poised to resume the clash yesterday, a
riot squad from the Anuradhapura and Mihintale Police was stationed near
the university as Police led by Mihintale OIC Sujeewa Siriwardena
summoned both parties for discussion to resolve the issue.
Five student suspects involved in the clash were handed over to
police by the university authorities while some villagers said to have
attacked the students also voluntarily surrendered to police.
Inspector Siriwardena said on the instructions of ASP Raja
Wickramanayake he was able to hold discussions with both parties and
bring about an amicable settlement later. |
