Police settle Anuradhapura clash

A clash between a group of undergraduates of the Rajarata University and residents of Ambathalagama village which erupted Tuesday was amicably settled by Police after discussions between both parties yesterday.

Three faculties closed

Three faculties of the Rajarata University were closed following a dispute between undergraduates and villagers.

Vice Chancellor K. A. Nandasena said the Faculties of Applied Science, Management and Humanities were indefinitely closed from yesterday.

Three villagers and several students were injured in the clash which erupted between the students of the Applied Science Faculty and the villagers Tuesday.

When the two parties were poised to resume the clash yesterday, a riot squad from the Anuradhapura and Mihintale Police was stationed near the university as Police led by Mihintale OIC Sujeewa Siriwardena summoned both parties for discussion to resolve the issue.

Five student suspects involved in the clash were handed over to police by the university authorities while some villagers said to have attacked the students also voluntarily surrendered to police.

Inspector Siriwardena said on the instructions of ASP Raja Wickramanayake he was able to hold discussions with both parties and bring about an amicable settlement later.
