Correction and Clarification
Tank project targets 6,000 farmers
PEACE Project Director V. Regunathan has sent us a clarification with
reference to our news item with the above title which appeared in our
issue of March 6, 2010 on this page.
He says:
"It is stated therein Iranaimadu tank was originally built by the
Dutch. According to the Irrigation Department records this tank was
built in the last century around 1905 by the British. The then engineer
in charge of the Irrigation Department was Henry Ward who later became
the Director Irrigation. Unlike today there were no consultants for this
projects. The entire design and construction was done by the Irrigation
Department, of course mainly of British origin. According to historical
records the Dutch had not built any major tanks during their period. Dr.
R. L. Brohier (who is of Dutch descent) retired Surveyor General who
wrote the book 'Ancient Irrigation Works' (three volumes) had not
mentioned about Dutch contributions for this scheme."
