Attack on Matara Mayor's residence:
Investigations continue

Investigations are being conducted into the attack on the Matara
Mayor's residence, the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court
yesterday.
Senior State Counsel Viveka Siriwardane appearing for the respondents
told the Supreme Court that a B report had been filed in the Magistrate
Court on February 24, with regard to the attack on the residence on
February 24.
The Counsel also submitted that the respondents had been directed to
take steps to prevent the recurrence of similar attacks in the future.
Petitioner Matara Mayor S.M.W. Upul Nishantha filed the Rights
application in the Supreme Court that his residence had been attacked on
February 21. He stated that he had complained to the Matara Police but
Matara Police had failed to inquire into the attack. The petitioner
cited H.S.M. Cader, HQI Matara, the SSP Matara and several others as
respondents.
The petitioner is seeking a direction to inquire into the attack and
to prevent similar attacks on the petitioner.
He is also seeking a Court declaration that the failure of the Police
to inquire into the incident was in violation of his Fundamental Rights.
The Bench comprised Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, Justice P.A.
Rathnayake PC and Justice Chandra Ekanayake.
Counsel Saliya Pieris appeared for the petitioner.
