Teacher, student ratio brought down

UPFA General Secretary and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha addressing the weekly UPFA press briefing held at the Mahaweli Centre yesterday said that the UPFA Government increased the number of teachers from 187,000 to 223,000 and recruited one fourth (35700) of teachers who are in the service at the moment. Teacher student ratio has been brought down to one for 18. According to Minister Premajayantha during the UNP regime parents had to obtain school uniforms from Grama Niladharies by travelling many kilometres by bus.

They spent money to obtain the free school uniform. But now students get school uniforms in their classrooms.

The amount of funds allocated in the budget for the education sector increased by 8 percent and it is Rs 91 billion at the moment.
