The Government has embarked upon a massive construction project of
building the new Kalladi bridge in Batticaloa to boost the economic and
social activities in the East by enhancing the connectivity in the
region.
The new Kalladi bridge spanning the Kalladi lagoon lies on the
Pottuvil- Batticaloa road. It is built at a cost of Rs. 3,806.8 million
with JICA funding.
A Spokesman for the Highways and Road Development Ministry told the
Daily News that this is a very important bridge located on the
Pottuwil-Batticaloa main road which is used by thousands of motorists
and pedestrians.
The old single-lane Kalladi bridge which is one of the few main
entrances to the Eastern Province was in a dilapidated state for a long
time.
"When vehicles cross the bridge, a huge traffic congestion is created
inconveniencing the public," he said.
