NARA helps develop Fisheries industry

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has conducted an awareness program for the fishing community in Negombo to develop their fisheries industry using modern technology.

NARA Oceanography Division Head Dr. Kamal Tennakoon said NARA has developed a technology using satellite images to identify fishing locations. This was carried out by downloading satellite images of the ocean.

"After receiving images from the satellite, we compare the data and find the fishing ground.

This depends on the sea water temperature and other parameters," he added.

Information of fishing ground and the exact location will be transmitted to multi-day boats engaged in fishing through radio, fax or e-mail.
