UN humanitarian teams in Chile
UN: A team from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA) traveled to Chile on Tuesday to work with the UN mission
in that quake-hit country.
The group will also work with staff of the Santiago-based Economic
Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, said UN Under Secretary
for Humanitarian Affairs Catherine Braga.
In remarks to journalists accredited to the UN headquarters in New
York, Braga highlighted Chile’s good level of preparation to face
disasters like the 8.8-degree quake that hit the country on February 27.
However, she reiterated that the top world body is ready to help in
everything, which was expressed by phone by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon
to President Michelle Bachelet.
Braga said that Chilean authorities requested specific items needed
now, including satphones, field hospitals, autonomous dialysis
facilities, electric power generators, water purification plants and
mobile bridges. New York, Wednesday (Prensa Latina)
