Children
It’s Big Match season
Dear Children,
I am sure that all of you boys are pre-occupied with the school big
matches as sports plays an important part of our lives. I know most boys
and girls are cricket fans and many play the game. Like dramas, concerts
and other extra curricular activities, cricket too has a special place
in the school calendar.

Well, the School Big Match season is here and they are the centre of
attraction. The Thurstan-Isipathana Big Match is already over for this
year.
Among the other Big Matches are Ananda Nalanda Big Match known as
Battle of the Maroons held for the 81st year, Royal-Thomian (Battle of
the Blues - 131st time), St. Joseph’s and St Peters (Battle of the
Saints - 76th time), Dharmarajah and Kingswood- Kandy (Battle of the
Maroons), Prince of Wales and St Sebastians - Moratuwa (Battle of the
Gold), Thurstan and Isipathana. Big Matches also taking place in other
major cities like Kurunegala and Jaffna.
I am sure you will join others and cheer for your school team Even
the old school boys join in the celebrations which give a carnival
atmosphere.
However it is vital to maintain discipline and have clean fun by not
tarnishing the image of your school. Cricket should be played as a
gentleman’s game.
I know that all girls would also join in the fun and support your
brother schools. Have fun.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is marked on March 8 every year. It is a
major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social
achievements of women. Since women comprise more than 50 percent of the
population in the world the day is significant for all of us.
The role of women in the economic and social welfare of the country
should be given due recognition. Women should be given equal
opportunities in studies and other fields. Women have excelled in all
fields which were once considered as male domains and proved their
talents and abilities in abundance.
On this day political and social awareness of the struggles of women
worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
The first International Women’s Day was observed on February 28, 1909
in the United States.
Bye for now.

Cathedral Square is the heart of the
city. Blend of domes, towers, antique shops and cosy cafes
set among the winding streets are only a part of the
beautiful atmosphere which one finds in Vilnius’s Old Town.

Lithuania is a country in Northern Europe, the Southernmost of the
three Baltic States. Situated along the Southeastern shore of the Baltic
Sea, it shares borders with Latvia to the North, Belarus to the
Southeast, Poland and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the
Southwest. Its population is 3.32 million. Its capital and the largest
city is Vilnius.
During the 14th Century, Lithuania was the largest country in Europe:
present-day Belarus, Ukraine and parts of Poland and Russia were
territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. With the Lublin Union of
1569 Poland and Lithuania formed a new state, the Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth. The Commonwealth lasted more than two centuries, until
neighbouring countries systematically dismantled it from 1772 to 1795,
with the Russian Empire annexing most of Lithuania’s territory.
In the aftermath of World War I, Lithuania’s Act of Independence was
signed on February 16, 1918, declaring the re-establishment of a
sovereign state. Starting in 1940, Lithuania was occupied first by the
Soviet Union then Nazi Germany. As World War II neared its end in 1944
and the Nazis retreated, the Soviet Union reoccupied Lithuania. On March
11, 1990, Lithuania became the first Soviet Republic to declare
independence.
Prior to the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, Lithuania had one
of the fastest growing economies in the European Union. Lithuania is a
member of NATO, the Council of Europe, and the European Union. Courtesy:

Inter House Athletic Meet of Musaeus College - 2010
The inter house athletic meet of Musaeus College was held on February
19 at Reid Avenue.
The opening ceremony consisted of lighting the Olympic flame, taking
the oath and declaring the meet open. The Western and Eastern bands
displayed their talents through a Band display. Track events and Group
relays were a chance for the students to compete with each other. The
Teachers’ race and the Past Pupils’ race were highlights of the meet.
Eye catching costumes made the Drill display a colourful event. It
was evident that the squad had reached perfection through hard work. The
invited school event received much attention.
Our Principal, S. Dandeniya as well as the Games Captain addressed
the gathering. Chief Guest Julian Bolling in his speech said
participation is more important than winning.
Next on the agenda was the much awaited prize distribution. De Abrew
House secured the first place with Olcott, Besant and Higgins Houses in
2nd, 3rd and 4th places, respectively.
At the end of the day, everyone had a smile on their faces because it
was an event to remember.

- Part 12
In ‘Kid’s Den’...
Four children, Pramodaka, Nalaka, Champika and Chinthaka, go on a
trip to the woods with their parents for their school holidays. In the
middle of the night the children are awakened by a strange noise. On
following their dog, Scooby, Chinthaka is snared by the spell of the
‘luring stones’. Pramodaka departs with Ruwi, a pixie, to recall a book
of spell to cast off the spell while the others remain behind with Sachi,
a gnome. A storm breaks and the kids are scattered.
Meanwhile Sulo, the goblin who is always trying to make trouble for
the mythical creatures, comes up with a nasty plan. She rushes off gang
up the rest of her pack and reveals an age old secret.
However the group discovers that it is not only Sulo’s secret that is
uncovered by the storm. Something dark and deadly had been hidden in the
depths of the earth waiting to release itself and return for revenge...
(‘Return of the Kids’ is the sequel to ‘Kid’s Den’)
While Zira and Shamilka had gone over the comfort Suzie Ruwi knew
that she had to seize her chance. There was only one person who would
dare to help her out in the situation. She went over to IBB but saw that
Eagle Eye, who was the second in command during HE’s absence, had made
an appearance.
“Of course he would come rushing in. He never leaves us together with
the others. He has to have a gate-keeper to watch and monitor their
moves,” she thought angrily.
Motioning to Pramu she walked past IIEI Ruwi stumbled and dropped her
cap at IBB’s feel. IBB looked startled but made no attempt to help her.
It was against HE’s rules to help those outside the department.
Ruwi picked up her hat and dusted it holding it in front of her to
cover her face from Eagle Eye. The gnome glared but his attention
wandered over to the entrance as Pramu hopped over to NLK and began
chatting with him.
“It’s now or never,” Ruwi thought and ducked behind IIEI’s well-built
frame. He gave her a curious glance but made no move to speak.
While JVK was snoring away and Eagle Eye’s attention was fixed on
Pramu, Ruwi sprang at IBB. “I need help... please help me. I will
conjure a magical spell within seconds to get the message into words.
You will have to slip it onto the front cover of the Mythicscope,” she
whispered.
At first the gnome made no sign that he had heard the news.
Frustrated she was just about to turn away when she heard his voice.
”That’s impossible Ruwi. The front cover is with JVKL,” he said.
JVK of all people! Ruwi glanced over at the sleeping gnome. It would
not have been difficult to take the copy out of his hand but with Eagle
Eye around it was another story.
She did not know that Zira had returned and had been listening to the
exchange. He tugged at her elbow.
“We should distract Eagle Eye. I have an idea. Allow me...” he
whispered.
Ruwi watched curiously as the little gnome bounded back into the
other room. What could he be up to?
