MPs security request:

AG asked to check on possibility

The Supreme Court yesterday directed the Attorney General to check the possibilities of providing security to former Opposition MPs whose security has been withdrawn by the Government after the dissolution of Parliament. The direction was made following a petition filed by 17 former Opposition members.

The Bench comprised Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga, Justice P.A Ratnayake PC and Justice Chandra Ekanayake.

The Court directed State Counsel Ms. Viveka Siriwardena de Silva who appeared for the Attorney General to obtain further instructions in connection with the applications and submit them to Court on March 5.

The ex-MPs in their petition to Court stated that their lives were in danger following several death threats after the dissolution of Parliament. The petitioners wanted their security to be restored until the General Election is over.

Presidents Counsel Thilak Marapana with Roland Perera and Janaka Marapana appeared for petitioners.
