President inaugurates Nagamu Puravara project tomorrow

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the Nagamu Puravara project to promote common amenities to the people living in tenement gardens and housing schemes in the Colombo city tomorrow.

Over 50 percent of the population in the Colombo city live with minimum basic facilities. The Government aims to uplift their living standards through this project. Authorities have identified 1,492 housing schemes and tenement gardens belonging to various Government institutions in Colombo city. More than 697 small and mega housing schemes are maintained by the National Housing Development Authority.

This project which will initially be launched in 354 housing schemes and tenement gardens where these people are living with less facilities will be completed within five weeks.

The Government has laid special focus on the development of sanitary, potable water and electricity facilities in housing schemes and tenement gardens for dwellers’ benefit.

Sewerage systems and access roads are also to be developed under this project.

The Government has already planned the cleaning and maintenance of roads in and around the Colombo city and a proper plan is in place to carry out maintenance activities in the housing schemes of low income groups too.
