Marikar at the helm again


Hafiz Marikar

Kandy Municipal Council, once again elected the famous sporting figure of the hills Hafiz Marikar as its Chairman of Sports Hafiz Marikar became the first Sports Committee Chairman of the century old Kandy Municipal Council during the Mayorship of Harindra Dunuwille in mid 1990s, and created history becoming the first to do so, at that time.

Upananda Jayasundara was the head of the Play Grounds Department, both played Cricket, and led their schools. Harindra led Trinity and Upananda led Dharmaraja. Hafiz Marikar, the most senior ruling party member, is a well known figure in the sports field.

With years of experience, he is all out to bring the sports committee, to its former glory with the help of the Mayor.

His committee comprises senior member Vipula Ranasinghe, another top cricketer to come out of Dharmaraja, Raja Pushpakumara, Ananda Siriwardene, M.P. Jayasinghe, Gamini Janakarathne.

Sports Committee gives a big hand for the sportsmen and women in Kandy through their play grounds and the community centres.
