If there’s security threat:

MPs security could be restored

Though the former Parliamentarians’ security is withdrawn till the general election is over, if any one of them has a security threat, it can be restored on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

He said the withdrawals followed after the recent dissolution of Parliament after which all Parliamentarians become ordinary citizens. The allegation that this was a Government move to intimidate and disarm the Opposition is baseless. Since this affects both Government and Opposition members. All ordinary citizens cannot be provided with security since it is an expensive task, the Minister further explained.
