Suspended mayor yet to hand over office, vehicle

L.B. Aluvihare who has been suspended from the office of Mayor of
Kandy by the Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayaka had not
handed over his office room or the official vehicle upto yesterday
morning despite a written request made by the Municipal Commissioner. As
a result the Deputy Mayor Suminda Wickremasinghe who assumed the office
of Mayor in keeping with relevant gazette notification is unable to
perform his duties.
Lorry knocks down man

M. Weeraratne (45) a resident of Samagipura, Suriyawewa died on the
spot after being run over by a lorry at Suriyawewa on Monday.
Alleged driver of this lorry was arrested.

A resident of Eliyakanda, found guilty of keeping turtle eggs in his
possession was fined Rs. 30,000 by the Matara Acting Magistrate Charitha
Nanayakkara recently.
Turtles are an endangered species and rearing the reptiles or
possession of its eggs is illegal. Matara Police prosecuted.
Journalist in custody:
IGP directed to facilitate release
President Mahinda Rajapaka directed the Inspector General of Police
Mahinda Balasuriya yesterday to expedite the inquiries on Journalist
Chandana Sirimalwatta who is now in remand custody and cooperate in
getting his release from remand custody, a press release from the
President’s media division said.
SLAS examination
The open competitive examination for recruitment to the Sri Lanka
Administrative Service (SLAS) will be held on February 20, at eight
examination centres.
About 34,000 candidates will be sitting the examination, Government
Information Director said in a press release.
Admission cards have been posted to all candidates, the release said.
Students cautioned before blast

The elders who saw a student of Colubuthurai Hindu Maha Vidyalaya
fondling an object resembling a bomb cautioned the student to throw it
away. The student threw the object and it exploded killing two students
on the spot and injuring eight others.
This happened at Colombagam about four miles from Jaffna town. Some
labourers had cleaned a compound covered with bush and recovered a
mysterious object.
They have placed that object at the foot of a tamarind tree and gone
away. It exploded killing two students on the spot and injuring eight
others severely. They were admitted to Jaffna Teaching hospital.
Applications for displaced voters extended

Accepting of applications of those voters who are unable to cast
their votes in the area within which their polling stations are
situated, due to conditions prevailing in the area , has been extended
until February 26.
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka has said in a press
communique that applications are now called from those who are unable to
vote at their designated polling stations, to take necessary steps to
allow them to cast their votes at different polling stations.
An applicant should get the approval of the Grama Niladhari. They are
also required to mention their National Identity Card (NIC) numbers on
their applications. The applications that are devoid of Grama
Niladhari’s approval will not be processed.

second Annual General Meeting and a ceremony of saluting war heroes on
