HC confers British nationality to surrogate twins
The British High Commission in Colombo announced that it has just
issued British passports to surrogate twins. This is the first case of
its sort seen in Sri Lanka.
The High Commission worked closely with the Commissioning parents
(both British) and the Home Office in the UK to assist the twins in
registering as British Nationals. Although the UK Surrogacy Arrangements
Act dates back to 1985 it is still quite rare to see one of these cases.
As both the Commissioning parents and the surrogate mother met all the
necessary requirements under the Surrogacy Arrangements Act, the British
High Commission was pleased to assist in confirming British nationality
for both babies.
The parents of the twins who wish to remain anonymous said "we found
dealing with the UK High Commission very easy and all the staff were
more than helpful in helping us obtain British nationality for our
twins.
Their Sri Lankan family will be sad to see them go after 4 months
here but their British grandmother is eager to see them for the first
time.
They will be brought up as frequent visitors to Sri Lanka and have
close links to the country and languages."
British High Commissioner Dr. Peter Hayes said "I am delighted that
we have been able to play a role in forming a new British family. I wish
the twins and their parents every happiness." |
