‘Recycle Polythene used for polls campaign’

The Environment Ministry yesterday directed all local government authorities to make arrangements to recycle polythene and other non degradable material that will be used by candidates for the general election campaign. According to Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Ministry has no legal authority to ban the use of posters, cutouts and polythene in the election campaign.

“We can only request the candidates to minimize the use of posters and cutouts in the election campaign,” he said. Minister Ranawaka said he would set an example to other candidates contesting the forthcoming General election by refraining from the use of posters and cutouts throughout his election campaign.
