Peterites well placed

St. Peter’s College were well placed at 168 for 2 in reply to S. Thomas’ first innings total of 235 runs on the opening day of their annual inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which commenced at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

The Thomians were heading for a big score at one stage following two good knocks from Pasan Wijewardena (91) and Nuwan Kavinda (86). However the Peterites stormed back into the game through their two medium pacemen skipper Chatura Peiris and Lahiru Jayaratne who shared eight wickets between them.

Sri Lanka Under 19 wicket keeper batsman Andy Berenger then struck an unbeaten 79 and along with Shanaka Fernando (51) the pair put St. Peter’s College well on course to a good first innings total.

S. Thomas’: 235 (P. Wijewardena 91, N. Kavinda 86, C. Peiris 5 for 40, L. Jayaratne 3 for 70)

St. Peter’s: 168 for 2 (A. Berenger 79 n.o, S. Fernando 51, A. Emmanuel 21 n.o)

Varuna a stunning 130

Stylish opening batsman Varuna Fernando hit a magnificent 130 as St. Benedict’s College piled up a formidable 317 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match against D. S. Senanayake College which began at Kotahena yesterday. Fernando stroked seventeen boundaries and also put on 152 runs for the second wicket along with Roy Shiran (40).

St. Benedict’s: 317 (V. Fernando 130, R. Shiran 40, E. Ratnayake 65, S. Patterson 26, M. Gunasinghe 3 for 100, H. Perera 2 for 34) v D. S. Senanayake.

Ramith, Maduka hit tons

Opener Ramith Rambukwella and Maduka Rajaratna completed superb centuries and figured in a third wicket partnership of 157 runs as Royal College took firm control over Maliyadeva College Kurunegala on the opening day of their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which commenced at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Maliyadeva: 178 (D. Mahawatte 43, V. Kumara 37, S. Silva 29, M. Tantrigoda 4 for 34, G. Deva 2 for 32, I. Khan 2 for 58) .

Royal: 267 for 6 (R. Rambukwella 100, M. Rajaratna 113 n.o, P. Vitharanage 2 for 32, D. Danushka 2 for 57).

Nalanda vs Rahula a draw

Nalanda College had to be content with first innings honours over Rahula MV Matara in their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which ended in a draw at Campbell Place yesterday.

Nalanda: 275

Rahula MV: 131 (S. Kumara 50, D. Jayasinghe 5 for 26, N. Karunanayake 3 for 31) and 156 for 8 (N. Tharanga 23, M. Ekanayake 47, S. Dilshanka 31 n.o, D. Jayasinghe 4 for 30).

Maris Stella in control

Maris Stella College were well poised to take a good first innings lead after they had bundled out Thurstan College for 152 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which began at Negombo yesterday.

Thurstan: 152 (J. Jawed 72, N. Fernando 5 for 65, A. Jayasinghe 4 for 29).

Maris Stella: 142 for 5 (A. Jayasinghe 41 n.o, D. Shanaka 31, R. Wijewickrema 2 for 22) .

Mahanama looking for outright win

Mahanama College were well set to pull off an outright victory after having skittle out their opponents Joseph Vaz College for 100 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which commenced at Wennappuwa yesterday.

Mahanama: 289 (S. Ruberu 50, N. Perera 49, D. Tissakuttige 44, L. Weerakoon 37, U. Kumara 57, D. Rusiru 19, U. Nirmal 3 for 62, S. Meritas 2 for 60, R. Obreth 3 for 60).

Joseph Vaz: 100 (K. Vidura 22, S. Kalhara 21, Y. Thimothy 22, R. Welikannage 4 for 14, C. Wanniarachchi 2 for 22, D. Kumara 4 for 25) and 3 for 1.

Sachin takes 5 for 35

Sampath Bandara

Left arm spinner Sachin Jayawardena captured five wickets for 35 as Wesley College dismissed the strong Ananda batting line up for a modest 208 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their inter-schools under 19 cricket tournament match which began Campbell Park yesterday.

Ananda: 208 (S. Devage 52, M. Janadhi 43, T. Samarakoon 25 n.o, S. Jayawardena 5 for 35).

Wesley: 104 for 3 (J. Bongso 36, A. Fonseka 19 n.o, R. Suriyakumar 19 n.o.).
