Fonseka did not refuse to make statement - Military Spokesman

Military Spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe yesterday refuted reports by certain media that General Sarath Fonseka had refused to make a statement to the Military Police.

The real position is he refused to exercise his right to cross examine the witness led by Military Police.

He made this observation at a media conference held at the Media Centre of National Security. Maj Gen Samarasinghe further said that the suspect had the right to question witnesses who give evidence against him but General Sarath Fonseka refused to do so.

He also refused to exercise his right to call defence evidence at the summarizing of evidence. It is only after summerizing the evidence will the Army Commander decide if he is to be charged before a Military Court.

Referring to the legal process Samarasinghe said that evidence is being summarized.
