Maha purchasing drive begins

The Government yesterday began a paddy purchasing drive for the 2009
- 2010 Maha season from the Ampara district. Over 140,000 MT of paddy
are expected to be purchased this season.

The farmers will receive Rs. 30 for a kilo of Samba paddy while a
kilo of Nadu paddy would fetch Rs. 28.
According to an official of the Paddy Marketing Board, paddy
purchasing units at Addalaichenai and Samanthurai in the Amparai
district were kept open for paddy purchase yesterday and other units in
the district will be opened in the weeks to follow.
Purchase of paddy by the Government in other districts will also
begin shortly and these paddy stocks would be kept stored to uphold food
safety conditions of the health authorities.
The official said the Government has allocated Rs. 4060 million for
paddy purchase this year.
These stocks would be released to the paddy mills in a sequence to
quell any rice shortage in the market.
We have a number of stores in all districts where paddy is mainly
cultivated. Facilities are available to sore more than 14,000 metric
tonnes and paddy could be kept stored for more than two years" , he
