Romeo 10th time unlucky

A romeo with knack for fast living who had left nine unsuspecting brides in the lurch after marrying them to defraud their dowry, finally met his waterloo when he married a female bank officer in Akuressa. The suspect had married the bank officer and come to reside in her house on February 7.

Hot on the heels of his arrival he had taken Rs. 40,000 from the bank officer after demanding it from her.

The bank officer’s brothers who felt something fishy had alerted the police who arrested him on February 13. On interrogation, the suspect had confided that he had married several working girls from areas such as Ratmalana, Weligama, Katuwana, Urubokka, Hakmana and Beruwala after befriending them through calls on his mobile phone and left them stranded after taking their money and jewellery.

He had inveigled the girls by pretending to be a bank officer using different mobile numbers and false identity cards.

The suspect was produced before the Morawaka Magistrate and remanded till February 23.

Akuressa police are investigating.
