Rio Group Summit in Cancun

Mexico: Mexican Government officials are in the final stages of making preparations for the Rio Group Summit, slated for February 22 and 23 in the Caribbean resort of Cancun.

Prensa Latina learned that experts from the President`s office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and institutions related to security supervise the tourist centre of the state of Quintana Roo the conditions created for the meeting of more than 20 dignitaries from Latin America and the Caribbean.

According to reports received from Cancun, a meeting was held day before to shape the media coverage that will follow the meeting at the highest level of this regional coordinating group.

The unofficial program used in political and press circles indicate that the Summit will be preceded by meetings organised for experts and Foreign Ministers. It is also known in diplomatic circles that Mexico currently works in the project of two documents to present at the meeting, one making reference to the balance of its work as head of the pro tempore secretariat of The Rio Group, whose responsibility will pass to Chile in Cancun.

The other document, already mentioned in El Financiero newspaper, will deal with what they call a roadmap, or for the economic and trade integration of the region.

However, issues like the situation in Haiti after the devastating earthquake and what happened recently in Honduras, due to the coup against President Manuel Zelaya, will be for sure on the agenda to be addressed at Benito Juarez municipality, where Cancun is located. Mexico, Prensa Latina
