Dhanika wins ‘A’ Division Golf title

The characteristic feature of the 131 year old, Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) is the providing of a salubrious ambience for its members, to socially unwind and relax in an atmosphere that is most congenial.

Whilst this is true, it’s equally true to say, that the main thrust of the RCGC however is the fostering and promotion of the sport of golf amongst its members and guests.

Painstaking though it be, the club does organize and conducts major tournaments during different times of the year, which are prestigious in outlook. Not forgetting the Monthly Medal round golf competition, which is more often than not sponsored by a benefactor.

These medal round golf is worked off each month right through the year - these competitions enables the participants to focus on golf to thereby improve their skills and enhance the spirit of camaraderie that prevail amongst the members.

This year the monthly medal round golf began in January and the second of its kind was held last Saturday at the RCGC. There were around 100 golfers competing with play confined to the Stableford format. The players played according to their categories as determined by their respective handicaps - viz; ‘A’ Division 0-9, ‘B’ Division 10-18, ‘C’ Division 19-28. There was in addition a Masters, Seniors, Sri Lanka Pool Players categories.

Dhanika De Silva did well enough to win the ‘A’ Division, B. K. Jun won the ‘B’ Division, ‘C’ Division was won by Thejan De Silva. The Masters was won by Vitus Fernando, the seniors by J. M. Wanigasekera.

The pick amongst the pool players was N. Ranga.

‘A’ Division - Handicap 0 to 09

Winner: Dhanika de Silva - 64 Nett, Runner Up: Nihal Perera - 67

‘B’ Division - Handicap 10 to 18

Winner: B. K. Jun - 68 Nett B/B 9, Runner Up: Mindika Hettiarachchi - 68

‘C’ Division - Handicap 19 to 28

Winner: Thejan de Silva - 66 Nett B/B 9, Runner Up: Stopponi Giancarlo - 66

Masters

Winner: Vitus Fernando - 60 Nett

Runner Up: Neil Chanmugam - 64 B/B 9

Seniors

Winner: J. M. Wanigasekera - 65 Nett B/B

Runner Up: Lal de Mel - 65

Sri Lanka Pool Player

N. Ranga 66
