Police disperse protesters

An illegal protest campaign jointly organized by the JVP and UNP yesterday evening was dispersed by the Galle Police using least force. It had been organized in protest of the arrest of General (Rtd) Sarath Fonseka by the Military Police.

The protesters who gathered near the Olcott statue in the Galle Main Street tried to walk towards the central bus-stand of Galle when Police informed that the protest march could not be allowed as they had not obtained permission.

The protestors who refused to heed to the Police advice confronted with the Police and walked towards the Central bus-stand disturbing the nomalcy in the city. Among the mob were JVP Parliamentarians Chandrasena Wijesinghe and Ajith Kumara and several UNP members of the Galle Municipal Council.
