Fonseka's political role:
First evidence came from Tylvin - Wimal
Nuwan KODIKARA
The first piece of evidence that former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka
was engaging in politics whilst still being in service was provided by
non other than Tylvin Silva who stated that he(Fonseka) while on a visit
to the USA obtained advice from him (Silva), National Freedom Front
Leader Wimal Weerawansa said.
Sarath Fonseka is currently in custody based on evidence that whilst
he was Commander of Army and Chief of Defence Staff he was engaging in
politics and attempting to overthrow the Government, Weerawansa noted.
He said a former UNP Parliamentarian too had spoken to Fonseka over the
phone.
Addressing a Media briefing at the NFF Headquarters yesterday
Weerawansa said there is no truth in reports that Fonseka 's arrest was
politically motivated.
He observed that at no time in history has a Commander of the Army
dabble in politics while still holding that office and those who
deviated from this norm had been duly punished under military law.
"If the Army was politicised it have been extremely difficult to have
achieved the war victory", he added.
Weerawansa said there are many views circulating in the country
following the arrest of Sarath Fonseka. Any person was entitled to his
or her view. However this issue cannot be trivialized.
"Had Fonseka gained power we would not be speaking here today. There
were list of persons who were going to be held under house arrest within
24 hours or 72 hours".
The Military police has arrested Fonseka since he had breached army
discipline and worked towards denigrating the forces. If he is not
guilty he can exonerate himself, Weerawansa stated.
