Police thwart unruly JVP, UNP supporters’ attempt to enter SC

Police yesterday drove away an unruly mob of UNP and JVP supporters who attempted to forcibly enter the Supreme Courts Complex in Hulftsdorp.

According to reports the mob who were shouting slogans against the Courts was led by UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya.

Accompanying him were former MPs Dayasiri Jayasekera, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene and candidate at the recent Presidential election Siritunga Jayasuriya.

The protesters who were expressing solidarity with the former Army Commander who was arrested by the Military Police under the Army Act, had targetted the Supreme Court due to the inherent nature of the UNP to attack the Courts, according to observers.

Police used tear-gas to disperse the protesters who pelted stones indiscriminately injuring two policemen and several others.

The injured were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Journalists covering the incident too were stoned by the mob.
