Vehicle imports racket busted

Custom officials investigating into the massive vehicle import racket allegedly carried out by an importer based in Colombo 06 yesterday seized three vehicles which have been brought to the country illegally.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Customs Dayawansa Senerath, these vehicles have been found in a vehicle showroom that belonged to a leading company in Colombo.

He said this importer has undervalued a consignment of Virgo cabs imported from Thailand and the vehicles were seized by the officials under the direction of Customs Director General Sarath Jayathilake.

He said that this particular importer has carried out a number of such scams in the past and has successfully evaded prosecution due to loopholes in the law.
