Denham (170) steals the limelight in drawn game

Acting skipper Denham Perera hit a career best 170 as St. Peter’s College took major honours in their annual inter school under-19 cricket tournament fixture against St. Benedict’s College which ended in a draw at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

The elegant right hander who walked into the middle at a crucial stage of the innings grabbed the opportunity and occupied the crease almost the entire day as the Peterites finished on a huge 385 for 9 in their first innings.

Perera faced a total of 300 deliveries, hoisted one six and struck 17 boundaries during a superb exhibition of batting and also added 168 runs for the fifth wicket along with Kaushal Rodrigo who missed out a century by ten runs. Perera also joined a select band of Peterite brothers to have scored more than 150 runs in an innings after Angelo Perera who had the distinction of making scores of 150 runs on three occasions last season.

St. Benedict’s: 209

St. Peter’s: 385 for 9 (D. Perera 170, K. Rodrigo 90, N. Perera 35, P. Wanigasuriya 2 for 74, S. Patterson 2 for 44, E. Ratnayake 3 for 113).

Splendid 141 n.o. by Kasun

Middle order batsman Kasun Fernando hammered a splendid 141 not out as St. Sebastian’s College forced a draw to their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match against St. Joseph’s College which ended in a high scoring draw at Darley Road yesterday. Fernando played the sheet anchor role and kept one end occupied while hoisting four sixes and stroking 16 boundaries. He received excellent support from Heshan Dias, Ranesh Fernando and Amila Aponso who also went on to complete half centuries.

As a result the Sebastianites were able to pile up a massive 418 for 6 in their first innings in reply to their opponents total of 250 runs.

St. Joseph’s: 250

St. Sebastian’s: 418 for 6 (H. Dias 55, R. Fernando 61, K. Fernando 141 n.o, N. Alwis 30, C. Fernando 21, A. Aponso 51 n.o, C. Kumara 2 for 105, D. Fonseka 2 for 31).

Neomal - match bag of eight wickets

Spinner Neomal Wickremasekera took a match bag of eight wickets as S. Thomas’ College had the better of the exchanges in their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match against Lumbini MV which ended in a draw at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Wickremasekera returned excellent figures of four wickets for 33 as Lumbini MV collapsed to 119 for 9 in their second innings. Earlier S. Thomas’ College snatched a close first innings lead of seven runs thanks to two fighting half centuries from Sachin Peiris (64) and Chamod Pathirana (61).

Lumbini MV: 200 and 119 for 9 (D. Priyadarshana 43, N. Wickremasekera 4 for 33, U. Fernando 3 for 26).

S. Thomas’: 207 (S. Peiris 64, C. Pathirana 61, P. Jayasuriya 6 for 38, D. Dilshan 2 for 20).
