The JVP has now become the defender of corruption. The sacrosanct gentlemen of that party were carrying on their shoulders a Presidential Candidate who had used his position to award tenders for the purchase of equipment from a company owned by his son-in-law, JNP leader Wimal Weerawansa said in Parliament yesterday.

I will never merge North and East

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday stressed that he would never merge the North and the East under his administration. He said certain elements in the Opposition are changing its tune when they go to the North with the sole objective of winning the election.

Teachers’ salaries increased effective from July 2008

The Government has fulfilled another promise made to teachers by abolishing all salary anomalies of teachers. Accordingly salaries of teachers will be increased between Rs.1,005 and Rs.2,685 with effect from July 1, 2008. the increment granted to teachers by the Supreme Court Judgment will be added to their salaries in addition to this increase, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

CSE completes :

Best year in history

*Becomes second best performing stock market in world

Colombo Stock Exchange Chairman (CSE) Nihal Fonseka, said the CSE completed its best year in history in 2009, overcoming the challenges experienced in 2007 and 2008. The performance of the CSE during the 2009 made it the second best performing Stock Market in the world, according to Bloomberg Newswire.
