Teachers’ salaries increased effective from July 2008

The Government has fulfilled another promise made to teachers by abolishing all salary anomalies of teachers. Accordingly salaries of teachers will be increased between Rs.1,005 and Rs.2,685 with effect from July 1, 2008. the increment granted to teachers by the Supreme Court Judgment will be added to their salaries in addition to this increase, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

Promise fulfilled

* ‘Fast Track’ to be introduced

Addressing a special press briefing held at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday, Minister Premajayantha said the Government has allocated Rs. 6,000 million for this year to grant these salary increases for 220,000 teachers. The relevant amended circular 6/2006 (8), have already been issued.

According to Minister Premajayantha, a Grade 1 teacher will receive a total salary increase of Rs. 3,330 under the amended circular.

The due arrears will be paid from July 1, 2008. Zonal authorities will take steps soon to pay the increased salaries. The increase is also applicable to Principals.

In addition to those arrangements ‘Fast Track’ has been introduced enabling teachers to move to their next grade within a short period of time according to their qualifications such as diplomas, post graduate diplomas and master degrees.

The teachers who are in Grade 1 have been allowed to enter into ‘supra grade’ according to their requirements. ‘Instructor service’ has been introduced for instructors. The salary increase is only an interim arrangement and further increases can be done considering the public sector as a whole, the minister added.
