SIGNIS honours screen virtuosos

The 33rd SIGNIS awards took to the John de Silva stage recently

The movies and teledramas screened in 2007 and 2008 were felicitated
at the event. Prasanna Jayakody's Sankara, Vasantha Obeysekera's
Aganthukaya and Sudath Devapriya's Udugamyamaya topped the list by
clinching a majority of awards for the most outstanding movies to be
screened in the two years.
At the SIGNIS Salutation for the cinema directions screened in 2006,
the award for Best Art Direction was given to Rohan Samaradiwakara for
Uduganyamaya. The Best Sound Editor was Kalinga Gihan Perera in Hiri
Poda Vessa, Best Make Up Artiste was Wasantha Vittachchi for his make up
skills in Udugamyamaya and the Best Editor was Ravindra Guruge in
Sewwandi. The awards for the Best music direction was handed over to the
late Master Premasiri Khemadasa for his musical score for Berunda
Pakshiya while the Best Script went to Udayakantha Warnasuriya for his
script in Hiripoda Vessa. The Best Cameramen was M. D. Mahindapala for
his cinematography in Udugamyamaya.
Navaratne Gamage who composed the music for Uthuvan Kandae Sardeyal
and Nadeeka Guruge who was the music director for Sankar also clinched
awards.

Young critic, Silumina journalist, vocalist and Fine Arts University
lecturer Nuwan Nayanajith Kumara walked away with the Cyril B. Perera
Memorial Award for 2007 while former wordsmith of Sarasaviya Aruna
Gunaratne bagged the Cyril B. Perera Memorial Award for 2008 for their
contribution in nurturing the cinema and arts scene. Devapriya's
Uduganyamaya won the Gold Award for the most outstanding direction while
the Gold award for Creative Acting-(Female) was given to Chandani
Seneviratne. Malani Fonseka won the Creative Acting-Female- Silver
Award.
The Gold Award for Creative acting (Male) was given to Ranjan
Raanayake while child actor Mauli Fernando managed to walk away with the
silver award of the same category. Seasoned programs director Bertram
Nihal, Roshan Ravindra and renowned teledrama director Sudath Rohana
were also felicitated for their creations. Sandali Welikanne, Asoka De
Soysa, Jayantha Atapattu and Channa Perera also won awards for the
exceptional cinematic skills they portrayed in the past years.
For 2007 Sankara was chosen as the most creative direction and
Aganthukaya became the year's Most Esteemed Cinematic Creation. Both the
Gold and Silver awards were handed out to Saumya Liyanage. The Silver
Award for Creative Acting went to Wijeya Nandasiri for Sikuru Hathe and
Gold Award for Creative Acting was clinched by Nita Fernando for
Nisalagira. This was the third time she had gotten her hands on the Best
Actress Award at the SIGNIS.
In addition a number of other significant award were handed over to
Sunil Wijeratne, Palitha Perera, Ruwan Costa.
The SIGNIS Awards (World Catholic Association for Communication),
formerly known as the OCIC Awards, are presented annually by SIGNIS to
recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including
directors, actors, and writers. |
