Writing by Peradeniya academics and students

Academics and students from the Thamil speaking communities belonging to the Thamil Sangam have brought out their Annual recently. The 39th issue of Ilankathir is edited by Y. Kalaivani and M. Jeyseelan. The front cover depicts the different hazards experienced by the students and mothers in the Thamil-speaking areas during the 30 year war. The back cover has a photograph of the office-bearers of the Thamil Sangam (2008-2009). N. Kalaivaanar's verse describes the cover picture.

The Sangam's anthem written by Chandradasan is based on the tune of the Indian National anthem-Jana Gana Mana-. The Vice-Chancellor, Proof. Abeygunawardena in his message says that 'the the articles and creative writings published have immensely enriched the literary activities and preserve and promote multiethnic, multi cultural heritage in our country"

The head of the Thamil Department Dr Thurai Manoharan informs that since 2006 the Sangam honors Lankan literary personages. Dominic Jeeva and Teliwatte Joseph, Neervai Ponniyan, Prof K.Sivathamby and Francis Jenam were honoured.

The President of the Sangam, S. Thanujan says globalization; demands and agendas of the World Bank accounted for the distancing of students.

They were driven away from non academic political activities. Narrow nationalism, communalism, and regionalism, religious consciousness and cheep cinema were hindrance to preserve the unique arts of the communities. Other students also have written messages. There are 45 readable and informative articles in the Annual.

Some of the articles that may be mentioned are on the following:

A critical Note on the Concept of Saivaism and Thamil, development of Literature during the Chola Period, IT and Thamil, Emotional conflicts and depiction of plight o the refugees in the poetry by the expatriates, the voice of nationalism in Lankan Thamil poetry,, Feminism in Thamil poetry, the origins of Lankan Modern Thamil poetry,, Checkpoint,, media conduct, World Financial crisis and Lankan Economy,, Islam and human rights, some notes on paradigm of Thamil nationalism in Lanka, gender distinction in Lanka and so on..

The Annual is an indicator of how the present undergraduates view things enriched by new knowledge.
