Ministry cracks whip on quacks

Getting tough

* Nearly 6,000 quacks in the country

* Raids on bogus medical institutions

Quacks who take innocent patients for a ride by posing as qualified doctors running so called medical institutions countrywide are to be rounded up and brought to book by the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry soon.

This follows a directive issued by Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to Ministry officials recently.

Accordingly, Medical Officers of Health will be empowered to identify quacks posing as genuine doctors in their respective areas and bring them before the law. The gazette notification empowering the MOH to take these steps will be issued soon to enable them begin raids on bogus medical institutions from January.

According to Ministry estimates there are nearly 6,000 quacks operating as qualified doctors countrywide said, the Ministry release.
