Bread price down
Irangika Range
The price of a loaf of bread was reduced by Rs. 3 from midnight
yesterday.
The Bakery Owners’ Association of Sri Lanka (BOASL) announcing the
price reduction, said that the new price of a loaf of bread will be Rs.
37. It was earlier Rs. 40, BOASL Chairman N.K. Jayawardene told the
Daily News that the decision has already been informed to the bakery
owners by the BOASL.
“Our members will reduce their prices, but it will take some time for
the small-time rural baker to conform”, he said.
Members of BOASL will display a notice announcing the new rates, he
further said.
The decision to lower bread prices came about after the Government
removed a complete custom duty on wheat grain imports with affect from
last Friday. Meanwhile, Prima Ceylon Limited has pledged the BOASL to
reduce a kilo of wheat flour by Rs. 10.
Though the Serendib Lanka Company has agreed to reduce the price, it
has not confirmed in writing yet.
In addition, the BOASL has requested all bakery owners across the
country to reduce the prices of flour-based products proportionately to
the bread price reduction. |
