Eastern Province development:

Over 3,800 projects completed

A total of 3,885 development projects have been completed in the Eastern Province at a cost of Rs 1,797 million under the Negenahira Navodaya (Eastern Resurgence) program initiated by the government to uplift the living conditions of the people of the Eastern Province affected by terrorism, said the Nation Building and Infrastructure Development Ministry yesterday.

This is out of a total of Rs 3,011 million allocated for the Negenahira Navodaya program under local and foreign funding, the Ministry said in a press release. The breakdown of this allocation district wise was Ampara Rs 1,113 million, Batticaloa Rs 923 million and Trincomalee Rs 974 million. The projects completed district wise already are Ampara 1,215 projects (Rs 675 million), Batticaloa 1,373 projects (Rs 566 million) and Trincomalee 1,294 projects (Rs 556 million)

Rehabilitation of roads, electricity and water supply schemes, uplift of education Health, Sanitation and cultural facilities, development of agriculture and fishing industries, animal husbandry and rural industries have taken pride of place in this development program.

However, when compared with the progress shown in most sectors, agricultural harvest had decreased by five percent due to bad weather conditions.
