The hand crafted items woven while piecing the delicate thread on the
beeralu Kotte (pillow) takes shape not only into traditional garments
but also many exquisite models of decorative figures and household items
like carpets, table décor, shoes, bags and many more.

This is exactly the sight that greeted those who took part in
Paramparaven, an exhibition and sale of beeralu work which oozed of
Southern flavour with a modern touch. These handcrafted beauties were
done by Tsunami affected women entrepreneurs of Mirissa and Hambantota
and was showcased to the public at the French Village in Colombo Hilton
last week.
The chief guest was High Commissioner of Canada in Sri Lanka Bruce
Levy and the guest of hounour was Nick Nikolaou, CEO of HSBC in Sri
Lanka and Maldives. The event was sponsored by HSBC and South Asia
Partnership, Sri Lanka (SAPSRI). The event was spearheaded by the SAPSRI
executive director Dr. Padma Ratnayake.
"We started off our first show with an array of women's garments and
household items. The second exhibition comprised a collection of men's
wear. This year's event is a mixture of garments as well as some unique
pieces made out of beeralu," Dr. Ratnayake said. |
