A few years ago the popular slogan was "The Private Sector is the livewire of national economy. There was much encouragement given by the State to the private sector to flourish and benefits of the returns helped to maintain economic balance. The opportunities were plenty for those desired to utilize and it was an open door for both the well educated and the not so educated to find employment.

While the majority wish to think that period of prosperity yet continues despite set backs in the past few decades, the reality seems to be quite the opposite. One opinion is that, that period of prosperity now has gone to the oblivion and the threat of closing down many of the private sector business institutions, work places and companies looming large. Those under the threat of being close down attribute it, to the crisis situation

created by world economic recession and the inability of the banks to support them. In this background there is good reading material useful is found in a new book to be released shortly which helps to maintain cordial relationship in the work place, facing variety of threats to employment. The book titled Wedapole Getalu Saha Wisandum is Francis Weerapperuma's third book dealing with issues pertaining to employment, employer and employee. The book consists of a series of articles he wrote to the 144 year old Gnanartha Pradeepaya, the oldest weekly newspaper in the country.

The previous books Obata Balapana Kamkaru Neethi and Kamkaru USAVIYA were claimed as useful tools in the hands of the lawyers, students of law ,the employers, employees and the labour unions. In their forwards to the two respective books mentioned above, the former Chief Justices G. P. S. de Silva and Sarath N Silva paid tribute to the work as filling a vacuum exited for many years to explain in Sinhala the finer points of law dealing with this very vital area. Francis Weerapperuma, author and journalist using his writing skills, authored the three books based on a wealth of experience he had collected serving as a President of Labour Tribunal, Assistant Commissioner of Labour and as a practicing lawyer well over three decades.

In her forward to the present book Wedapole Getalu Saha Wisandum Nirmala

Perera, Senior Lecturer, Law Faculty, Colombo University, states: "In any country of the world, economic prosperity could be obtained to the extent, the work place is able to run smoothly maintaining cordial relationship among the employers and employees. This becomes possible if and when both the employers and employees, understand, grasp and assimilate the spirit of the content of the Law of Contract which specifically stress on the aspects of duties and rights of both parties."

The efforts made by the author of this book dealing with six basic areas of vital importance, help both parties to fulfill this social obligation rest in them, and the author deserves appreciation, for underscoring and placing emphasis that aspect likely to ignore by both parties . His language is lucid, simple and matters dealt with are so timely help one to enhance and to widen one's knowledge".

In his forward, the author highlights the reasons that led him to write a series of articles and points to the fact that a host of variety of reasons are there to threaten the safety of employment. Sudden closure of workplaces, Restructuring, Peoplisation or Privatisation and the world economic recession are some of them that need to be focused our attention in the contemporary society.
