Special Police squads to deal with underworld

The Police Department has set up special squads to wipe out
underworld gang leaders and hard drug traffickers from the country.
Keeping with President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s “Mathata Thitha” the Police
Department will take stern action against the culprits, irrespective of
their ranks or position,said IGP Mahinda Balasuriya at a press
conference held yesterday at the Police Headquarters.
Arresting the underworld gang leaders and hard drug traffickers the
Police personnel have to face several threats. Sometimes the culprits
attempt to kill police personnel on duty; at such times the Police are
compelled to take stern action against the culprits.
In the process the culprits get killed, the IGP said.
The IGP appealing to the public and the media said to have faith in
him and assist him by way of supplying correct information about the
underworld gang leaders and the hard drug traffickers to build a free
and fair society.

Senior DIG N.K. Ilangakoon said that there is a drop in the criminal
activities in the country. During the war period the police personnel
conducted their day-to-day work in seven provinces except the North and
East.
But now the Police are active in all nine provinces as the war has
come to an end.
On the new IGP Mahinda Balasuriya’s five year program will help to
wipe out the terrorism and hard drug trafficking in the country, Senior
DIG Ilangakoon said.
Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said that the underworld gang leaders who
were involved in terrorist activities in the Western Province are in
custody and the police will take stern action against them under the
prevailing law of the land.
