The UNP in addition to losing its party colour and elephant symbol
also stands to lose remaining membership of the party with the exit of
Ranil Wickremesinghe from the Presidential race, Central Province
Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said.
He said the annocement of the candidature of General Sarath Fonseka
has failed to galvanize the UNP supporters and this is further a proof
of the growing number of party supporters for the UPFA in support of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The Minister was addressing supporters at the SLFP branch office in
Udariyagama in Peradeniya. The event was marked by the cross over of a
stanch UNP supporter and former Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha member M.M.
Perera to the SLFP and offering party membership.
The Governor said there is a huge enthusiasm evident among SLFPers
and whoever is put forward as a common candidate more and more forces
are joining in support of President Rajapaksa.
He this Presidential election is a referendum on decisions affecting
the country taken by President Rajapaksa during his four year tenure.
“Traitors against the country had spread various myths around the
world on the destruction of Prabhakaran and terrorism. The time has come
to teach a lesson to those who accused us of having committed war
crimes. Unfortunately Gen. Fonseka has become the chief victim of a
conspiracy against the country.
He said earlier only Rs. 500,000 was given to Pradeshiya Sabhas for
development activities. Today Rs. Rs. 500,000 is granted to uplift a
single village. All this is a result of Mahinda Chintana.
