UPFA ready for any election - Minister

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is the strongest and the UPFA is the most united political affiliation at present, said Mass Media and Information and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

“ We are ready to face any election that could be held at any time in the future. People have reposed their trust on us and we are not afraid to face any election,” Minister Yapa said at the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday.

“The UNP had started its liquidation process and they could not even find a leader from their own party to contest a Presidential election,” the Minister noted.

A general election has to be held before April. The President can rule for another two more years to complete his six year term. Under the Constitution it is the legal opinion the Government could hold any election now, he said.

Answering a question about the President’s query to the members at the recent SLFP convention, Minister Yapa said SLFP leaders always consult party members or ask them to air their views but the decision could be made by the President after due consideration.

Consultation and decision-making are two different processes in a democratic party, he said.

The Minister said the Opposition does not have a clear vision and the largest political party among the opposition, the UNP cannot decide about their leader.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka is idly boasting without any confidence about his own party, the Minister said. LdS
