Strike, only a last resort - PSUNU President

The accepted trade union tradition is to launch strikes only as a last resort when negotiations have failed to win over the demands of workers. The Public Service United Nurses' Union(PSUNU) will never support strikes launched in an ad- hoc manner leading to create any disruption of essential services, PSUNU President Ven. Muruththettuve Ananda Thera told the Daily News yesterday.

Commenting on the present salary anomalies contained in the salary review circular 06/2006, Ven.Ananda Thera said the PSUNU had a successful discussion with Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara and the demands related to the salary anomalies had been directed to the President for necessary instructions.

Therefore there are still some possibilities to be considered before launching strikes.

A small number of trade unions are trying to create unrest among employees related to the health services.

The PSUNU strongly advised its members not to support any such elements without giving thought to the issue seriously, the Thera stressed.
