Rs 10 billion project to protect people and environment
Work on the Moratuwa Lunawa Environmental Conservation and Community
Development Project has now been completed. It will benefit 18,000
families in the Moratuwa and Ratmalana areas, Urban Development and
Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardene said.
He said the project which cost Rs 10 billion was jointly funded by
the Japan Bank for International Corporation and the Sri Lanka
Government. The project covers an area of seven square kilometres
extending to the Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal area in the North and
the Moratuwa MC area in the South. It included a storm water drainage
system which will eradicate the constant flood threat faced by the
18,000 families in the area and also conserve the environment.
It will help uplift the living standards of people living on the
bunds or canals and create a maintenance and management strategy to
ensure the sustainability of the entire development process, the
Minister said. |
